Recently I came across this news clip and it made me think about the career path of a police officer. I know I mention excitement and danger on this blog, but in reality this is what makes the job of a police officer so unique. Yes, this sort of call is very rare and may be the only call in the history of police work where opening a jar was involved, but it's important to put this in perspective.

This may have been an elderly person who has no one in the world to help her with this unique problem and remembered that police are here to HELP.

By choosing a career in law enforcement you must know that every shift is different and not your typical day at work. From foot chases, to car chases, to...opening a jar, it's all in a days work. I promise you this, you will not be bored at work...ever.

Like someone once said, "It's the greatest show on earth and you have a front row seat!"

We will begin accepting applications soon. Keep an eye on this blog, website ,Twitter or Facebook and start getting prepared now. You will not need to open jars during the application process, but you should be prepared to do so just in case you are needed one day by someone who needs your help.

Class 212 Update - Cadet Rivera

After eleven weeks in a classroom learning Constitutional law, State law, and Civil law, Class 212 was getting a severe case of 'cabin fever'. I am glad to say the class held it together. Our class has entered the second phase of training at the Academy. Skills. Every Cadet is eager to get to skills. Cadets are trained in safe manipulation of driving a Police Cruiser. We are trained in the ways to protect individuals from harm to themselves, as well as, Police Officers. And lastly, how to safely use firearms. Safety is the key for everyone involved. Did I mention that this phase is fun? Oh yeah…real fun. Many Cadets have switched into competitive mode to see who can do the skills courses the best. It is challenging but it's a blast!

Becoming a Houston Police Officer is a difficult process. We are not even half-way through our training. The schedule and demands are tough. Plus, our trainers expect no less than excellence and professionalism from us. We are reminded that many eyes are upon us because the bar was set so high for our class. Recently, we had a Physical Midterm Test. We were told that we exceeded expectations and our class met a milestone that had not been achieved in years.

But the Class has learned that sometimes one step forward is easily met with two steps backwards in the same day or the same hour. As students we are taught to be ever vigilant. A thick skin in this profession is a must. If you find it hard to receive correction and criticism in any form, this may not be the career path for you. You also need an attitude of service. To become a police officer, you must come to terms with the fact that you are putting your life on the line for people you may or may not know. You must also choose integrity before loyalty in this line of work. As a public servant, you are looking for ways to help citizens, family, and fellow police officers. The reward is knowing you did your job with integrity and the way you were trained. Sadly, we may never receive a thank you.

Today we were told that Law Enforcement is an honorable profession. I would have to agree. Not because I chose this career but because I see the rich experience we see from those that have gone before us. I also see the hope and promise in the eyes of my fellow classmates in Class 212. Keep an eye on us. Expect great things from us.

Officers in Action

Recently during the holiday season, Officer G. Garcia and Officer S. Rubio were dispatched to a call for service which involved a woman who advised them that she suffered from depression and anxiety but did not have any money or resources to go to the doctor. Further investigation verified her claims and her need for help. The officers contacted the Houston Police Department’s Mobile Crisis Outreach Team to get her some assistance. The officers along with the Mobile Crisis Outreach Team immediately began to assist the woman in her time of need.

Officers Garcia and Rubio also observed that the woman’s two children were not adequately clothed and appeared to be hungry and cold. The apartment in which the family resided was cold and dirty and there was no food in the refrigerator or pantry. Further investigation proved that the woman was disabled, unemployed and in danger of losing her apartment. Officers Garcia and Rubio went to a nearby store and bought clothing and several holiday gifts for the children using their personal funds.

HPD would like to commend these officers for their generosity and thorough investigation. These officers demonstrated professionalism and diligence in the performance of their duties. As a result, this woman and her family will get the assistance that they need.

This is a good opportunity for you to gauge your current level of physical fitness and learn what you need to work on before you enter the academy.

This event is designed only for those individuals interested in joining the Houston Police Department who meet the requirements. Real Time Crime Center

Criminal Intelligence Analyst (CIA) Vela and CIA Baker work within a specialized unit called the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) for the Houston Police Department. Additionally, the RTCC is a centralized technology center in which its primary purpose is to expediently capture and provide field officers/investigators with instant and comprehensive information to help identify suspects, crime patterns and prevent emerging crime.

Recently, HPD officers were investigating an aggravated robbery and auto theft that involved a group of armed suspects. Specifically, the aggravated robbery occurred just after midnight as the victim was meeting a friend for the first time in a parking lot of an apartment complex. While waiting for her friend the unarmed victim was approached from behind by an unknown armed male. The armed suspect forced the victim into a nearby apartment and now the armed assailant was pointing a gun directly into the victim’s face. The armed assailant then sexually assaulted her while several other suspects ignored her plea for help. After the assailant assaulted the victim he grabbed her purse and dumped her items out, stealing her valuables and car keys. The armed gunman then stole the victim’s car and fled the scene. The victim regained her composure and that’s when she called HPD for help.

HPD officers quickly began their investigation into this horrific crime. Officers started to piece together a series of armed kidnappings, sexual assaults, armed robbery, and auto thefts that were related to the investigation. Furthermore, the investigators discovered that these offenses were being committed by a single group of armed suspects who were preying on young victims when they were alone and vulnerable.

The investigation team was moving as fast as it could to bring the armed group into custody and it was not long when their officers were involved in a vehicle pursuit with two of the armed suspects as they were attempting to evade arrest after fleeing from a stolen car. Through the course of the investigation, the investigators were able to determine that one of the armed assailants had called the victim from a cell phone. The investigators now needed assistance in locating the assailant’s whereabouts, so they contacted the RTCC for assistance.

Therefore, all relevant facts of the case were submitted to the RTCC for analytical research. CIA Vela and CIA Baker were assigned to the investigation. They both began to methodically process the information for any possible leads. Utilizing their analytical skills to query the various databases within the RTCC, CIA Vela was able to obtain a substantial amount of information such as, a picture, addresses and identifiers associated with the head of the armed group through a phone number that linked the suspect to a victim. CIA Baker continued with his search and verified the suspect’s phone number; further, he provided additional photos of the suspects and incrimination information associated with the crime spree. Furthermore, as the first two suspects were being questioned for the stolen vehicle it was discovered that they were part of a ruthless gang involved in a crime spree on the west side of Houston. The information that CIA Vela and CIA Baker provided to the investigators expedited the arrest of the remaining gang members for their violent heinous crimes. It was not long before investigators filed charges and arrested the entire gang including the ringleader. The information that the CIA Baker and CIA Vela provided the investigators was instrumental in the expedient apprehension of these violent assailants and the prevention of any further crimes by this violent gang.

This video footage from a Walmart surveillance camera in Georgia last week shows a 7-year-old girl only feet from her mother when a 25-year-old predator tries to carry her out of the store.
She fought back and got away.

The suspect was captured and arrested by police within an hour.

Please share this video with your children, family members and friends. It’s important to let your children know about these types of incidents and that they can happen within seconds if you are not paying attention.

Teach your children about the common lures predators use such as:

"I lost my pet. Will you help me find it?"
"I have some candy, money, or a toy for you."
"Your daddy and mommy told me to take you to them.”
“I work here and I need to speak with you.”

Recently, officers were dispatched to a Burglary in Progress. The victim stated that she was asleep upstairs when she heard a window break downstairs. She looked outside and saw three male suspects entering her back window. After the call was dispatched, Officers S. Wunderlich, W. Elliott, M. Gregory, P. Caro, and M. Pena, responded to the call and arrived in less than two minutes. The officers took position in the front and back of the home.

Officers Wunderlich and Gregory were positioned in the rear of the home, when the burglars started to run out the back door. The burglars saw the officers and ran back into victims home. Officers were advised that the victim was on an open line with the dispatch sergeant. The dispatcher advised officers that the victim could hear the burglars moving around inside her home. The incident became even more of a nightmare when the victim told the dispatcher that the burglars were coming up the stairs to her bedroom. A short time later the dispatcher could hear the burglars talking to the victim. The burglars were trying to find a way to get out of the home. One of the burglars told the victim that he wanted her to tell the police that he was her boyfriend and the other burglars were his friends.

Sergeant M. Miller arrived on the scene shortly after the officers. The victim was still on the open line, while she talked with the burglars. The victim was understandably scared and upset but was able to convince the burglars that she would follow their plan. They all went downstairs and officers ordered the burglars to come out the front door. The burglars and the victim came out the front door into a small area where they became trapped. They were ordered to lay flat by officers. Officer Pena grabbed the closest burglar and dragged him forward and out of the way so the victim could be separated from the suspects. All three of the burglars were arrested without further incident. Officers R. Perez, S. Yusuf, arrived and assisted in the arrest of the burglars. Officer C. Truhan processed the scene for evidence and took photos of the stolen property which was recovered from the burglars’ pockets. All three suspects were charged with the Felony of Burglary of a Habitation.

A second incident was dispatched as a Burglary in Progress, where the call slip read that witnesses observed several males break into an apartment and load items into a white Chevrolet Caprice. Within minutes Sergeant M. Miller and Officer M. Gregory, arrived on the scene and began looking for the suspects. Officer Gregory advised that he spotted a vehicle which matched the description of the suspect’s vehicle, exiting an apartment complex in the area. Sergeant Miller pulled in behind the suspect’s vehicle and advised that it was occupied by four males. Sergeant Miller assisted by Officer Gregory pulled the suspects over and detained the suspects. Sergeant K. L. Richards and Lieutenant T. M. Kubiak, supervisors over the Westside Tactical Unit, contacted officers on the scene and advised them that they were working several burglaries with the same vehicle and suspects. They arrived on the scene along with several officers from the Tactical Unit. The Tactical Unit took over the investigation. They interviewed the witnesses, conducted the field show up, got three of the suspects positively identified, transported the suspects, completed the offense report, and filed the Felony charge of Burglary of a Habitation on three of the suspects. Officers S. C. Wunderlich, H. Elliott, V. Nguyen, T. Le, assisted with the scene. Officer C. Truhan again processed the scene. Property from the burglary was recovered from the suspects and returned to the victim.

Officers S. Wunderlich, M. Gregory, W. H. Elliott, C. Truhan, and Sergeant M. Miller were pivotal in both of these burglaries. The officer’s quick response time and team work lead to both of these felony offenses ending with the arrest of six dangerous felons, and one juvenile that was released to his father. Sergeant Richards and Lieutenant Kubiak, of the Westside Tactical Team were on another assignment and heard the second call go out. They recognized it was related to cases they were working and quickly mobilized and took over the scene from patrol officers. Charges were filed against the suspects, stolen property was returned to the owners, and the traumatized young complainant was saved from further harm.

HPD would like to commend all officers involved for a job well done. Because of their quick response, dedication and hard work several dangerous criminals were captured and placed behind bars.

Crime Scene Unit

Everyone is familiar with the TV show CSI and all the spin offs. It is a unique, although somewhat over the top portrayal of what these officers really do. The HPD Crime Scene Unit is a very tight group of officers that work hand in hand with the Homicide investigators and patrol officers to help solve a case. They are part of the Homicide Division. This is a very interesting and unique job within the police department.

210 Update - OFFICER Williamson

After an endless academy, several months of field training and weeks of evaluation, the stressful training portion of the job is turning into the fun "catchin' bad guys" part of the job. During field training, new officers respond to every challenging, interesting or exciting call that drops, no matter where it is. Their goal is to expose new officers to as much as possible and train on as many subjects as possible while they've got the opportunity. We never really have to go far to get just about every kind of call you can think of. From what I'm hearing from my classmates, every district in Houston has its share of work to be done and excitement to be had. But, it's not all action and excitement. There are forms and procedures for everything you can imagine. Being detail oriented is required and being able to write well is critical. Frankly, writing a good report is as rewarding as the other work, because it's that perfect report that makes sure justice is properly served. The first time I saw a "routine" report of mine lead to a warrant and capture of a criminal, I was hooked on the "boring" stuff.

I've also been amazed by the amount of kindness and altruistic things officers do for folks each day. I've seen officers buy groceries and Christmas gifts for families in need and have seen officers genuinely comfort folks in the worst moments of their lives. This department is filled with accounts of officers putting themselves in harm's way to save a fellow human from disaster. It's the people here who make HPD's motto a reality; Order Through Law, Justice With Mercy. Making sure folks stay safely within the bounds of the law really is only half of the picture. The humanity officers bring to this work is the other half. I didn't think it would be quite this active and rewarding a career, but now I'm seeing first hand what the veterans were saying all along. Being a Houston Police Officer really is a front row seat to the best show you'll ever see!

A co-worker of mine was cleaning out his locker the other day when he came across this article. He sent it to me through inner-office mail. When I opened it, I realized this article was from 1987 and the officer in the photograph was me.

After I stopped laughing it made me realize just how diverse this career really is. I can assure you that every day on patrol is different than the day before. This is one of the attributes that makes police work so appealing. You will not get bored at work. From wrestling a ferret, to chasing a crook, to saving a life, this career path in not only exciting, but a great way to make a true difference in your community.

Through the Houston Police Foundation, the Adopt-a-Horse Program allows Houston businesses and organizations to sponsor Mounted Patrol horses for at least one year. The tax deductible $5,000 sponsorship covers all the operating expenses of the animal for the year.

Mounted Patrol Joins Houston Downtown Management District in Helping Name Four-Legged Crime Fighter

At 10 a.m. this morning, members of the Houston Police Department’s Mounted Patrol, the Houston Police Foundation and the Houston Downtown Management District will highlight the Adopt-a-Horse Program and announce a contest to name the Downtown District’s sponsored horse.

The event will be held in downtown Houston at Market Square Park, at 301 Milam.

Through the Houston Police Foundation, the Adopt-a-Horse Program allows Houston businesses and organizations to sponsor Mounted Patrol horses for at least one year. The tax deductible $5,000 sponsorship covers all the operating expenses of the animal for the year.

Officers Remembered: Dawn Erickson

Dawn Suzanne Erickson was born in Belleville, Illinois, on January 15, 1973. Her parents were David and Beth Erickson. She graduated from Westbury High School in southwest Houston in 1992, finishing in the top five percent of her class.

Continuing her education at the Houston Community College, she earned an Associates of Arts Degree in 1993. On August 29, 1994, she joined the Houston Police Department by entering Police Cadet Class No. 160. Upon graduation on March 3, 1995, she entered her probationary training period, which she successfully completed on August 28, 1995. She wore Badge No. 5963.

Christmas Eve Extra Job

Dawn’s first and only assignment was to the South Central Division of Central Patrol. She had completed only four months of a promising career when on the night of December 24 – Christmas Eve 1995 – she was on a voluntary extra-job assignment of her choice at a church in southwest Houston.

At approximately 6:45 p.m. in this most joyous of seasons, Officer Erickson was directing traffic for the Christmas Eve service at the Unity Church of Christianity, 2900 Unity Drive. Erickson was wearing a reflective jacket and using an orange-tipped flashlight. At this time, a motorist was eastbound on Unity in a 1987 Honda Accord. The motorist later reported that she only saw a red light flickering in the street.

It was at this point that the passing motorist struck Officer Erickson with the left front of the vehicle. The impact caused the officer to be thrown into the vehicle’s windshield and an additional twelve feet into the air and onto the pavement. Erickson suffered head and leg injuries as a result of the impact. A Houston Fire Department ambulance rushed her to Ben Taub General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m. She was only twenty-two years old.

This accident was professionally investigated by the HPD Accident Division. While Officers N.E. Maurer and R. S. Cedeno were the first units on the scene, Officers J. W. Nickell and R. Hernandez were the primary investigators from the Accident Division’s Hit and run Detail. Sergeant D. Hurd supervised as well as participated in the investigation. Officer R. Saenz was later assigned to assist in the investigative follow-up. Officer D. E. Henry, who was working this departmentally approved extra job with the complainant, was also on the scene to assist the responding officers.

The suspect driving the Honda Accord was quickly determined at the scene to have not had any major culpability in this offense. She was taken into custody and tested for any and all chemical substances in her body. All tests were negative.

The Accident Division conducted an extensive and thorough investigation. While investigators determined that the driver of the Honda was likely exceeding the speed limit at the time of the impact into Officer Erickson, a grand jury no billed her.

Officer Erickson was survived by her father David Erickson of Harlingen and her mother and step-father, Beth and Scott Green of Richmond. Also, by her brother Christopher Erickson, 15 years old and a sophomore in high school as well as her sisters Deanna Nixon and husband Brent and their two children, Faithe and Colby, and Nicole Erickson, a college student in Edinburg, Texas.

Emotional Pain

The Earthman Company was in charge of arrangements. Visitation was held from 8:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Earthman facility at 12555 South Kirkwood on Wednesday, December 27, 1995. Funeral services were conducted at the Sugar Creek Baptist Church, 13213 Southwest Freeway, at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 28. The Reverend Gene A. Moore and Police Chaplain Edwin Davis co-officiated. Burial followed at the Forest Park-Westheimer Cemetery.

For some reason unfortunately attributed to his own abilities, this writer was unable to locate any of the Erickson family. However, Mrs. Beth Erickson accomplished what I could not. In August 2007, Mrs. Erickson approached me at the HPOU Building and introduced herself as well as her daughter, Nicole, and two grandchildren.

After spending some time with Mrs. Erickson, she was asked to contribute to this story and she has graciously done so – but not without emotional pain. The following is a synopsis of Mrs. Erickson’s insight, which helps us all to better understand what kind of young lady Officer Dawn Erickson was and what an even more tremendous loss this was to her family, to HPD and to society in general.

Dawn decided at age 15 to become a police officer for HPD. She was so determined that she even worked out her high school courses along with summer courses to graduate early, knowing full well that she would need 60 college hours to join HPD. Her focus on this goal did not waiver even though she became a model and was also working in a business office. Her long-term goal was to be fluent in Spanish, join HPD and then maybe move on to the FBI or CIA.

Dawn loved being an officer and had expressed to her mom that HPD was a proud family and that her mom needed to show this pride because she “chose” this profession and loved what she was doing to help people. She had a strong faith in her Lord and had said that if God ever came for her, she would take his hand and go willingly.

And, that she did on Christmas Eve 1995.

Her mother had questioned her about working this job on Christmas Eve as they as a family usually spent this special time together. However, Dawn indicated that the church asked her to do this and she felt that she needed to do it. Instead, on Christmas Day, the family had to go to Dawn’s apartment to obtain a uniform for her burial.

Also, Mrs. Erickson described in detail how difficult it was afterwards to deal with the unopened Christmas presents Dawn had purchased for her family.

Where are They Now?

Dawn was very close to her siblings, especially her brother Chris. They had birthdays close to each other and usually celebrated those occasions together.

In 2007, Dawn’s parents, David and Beth, are once again Mr. and Mrs. David Erickson. They live in Manvel, Texas and Beth is a principal of an Alternative School for an area School District. Deanna and Brent live in Rosharon, work for Kroger, and their children are Faithe, 19, a college student, and Colby, 14, who is in the 8th grade.

Nicole is married to Richard Starnes. They live in the same area and are the parents of four children, Aaron,15, Mariah, 9, Lexi, 4, and Tre’, 2. Nicole is a high school math teacher. Chris is married to Chantal and works for Morrison Homes in Richmond, where they live with their two-year old daughter, Kenna Dawn. A step-sister, Stephanie, lives in Kerrville.

Officers in Action

Recently, Senior Police Officer T. Hawkins a 27 year veteran of HPD was on patrol when she received a call regarding three suspicious males lurking near a residence. She quickly arrived at the location, parked her patrol car out of sight and began a search on foot for the three males. During the search she began looking through the fences and observed three males coming out through the back window of a home that they had just burglarized.

Officer Hawkins immediately requested back-up and broadcasted the description of the suspects as they fled on foot. Officer Hawkins jumped into action and quickly located the suspects running down the street and was able to detain all three of them at first. As she was handcuffing two of the suspects, the third one ran away. However, by this time other patrol units and a K-9 unit began to arrive to help Officer Hawkins out. They quickly located the third suspect and he was arrested without incident.

All the stolen property was recovered and returned to the victim. Charges were filed on all three suspects.

The skill in which this veteran officer accomplished her duties reflects great credit upon herself and the Houston Police Department. HPD would like to commend Senior Police Officer Hawkins for getting three more crooks off the street and a job well done.

Cadet James - 212

I would like to introduce myself, I'm Jimmy James, 21 years old, born and raised in Houston and currently a cadet in academy class 212 which started December 5th. Becoming a Houston police officer has been a lifelong dream of mine and being accepted into the academy makes me that much closer to achieving my dream.

Since I don’t have any prior military of law enforcement experience it made me a little nervous, but I learned that most of my fellow cadets don't either. During week one our training staff made it clear that they have high expectations of us since we are the first class to have both the reading comprehension test and the entire physical fitness test administered to us in the application process.

Last Friday we had our initial physical fitness test and I have to say that the “Run with your Recruiter” events in Memorial park that I took part in, has been a great help for me, but I still need to work on my skills. My best advice to applicants is to start working on your running and push ups now if you plan on applying once the process opens again.

I am also impressed with the unity that our class has, if you need help or if you're struggling with something you can always count on your fellow cadets to help you make it through. Week one is now history and I can't wait for my second week as a cadet in the Houston Police Academy!

Cadet Rivera - 212

This is the first week of the Houston Police Academy. For me, Cadet Rivera, this process started back in July at a friend's birthday party where I met Sergeant Brown and was invited to attend an Open House at the HPD Police Academy. Deep down inside, I knew I was meant for this. However, this was not the first time I had thought about being a police officer. Back on 9-11, when America was attacked by terrorists, I was in the car ready to sign-up but my lovely wife asked me not to go because our children were too young at the time. She was right. I would never trade those years. But, now, at age 42 could I make the cut?

Friends and family encouraged me to apply. The application process was grueling and very introspective. I realized I had gained too much weight and began working out with renewed purpose. I showed up to my second “Run with the Recruiter” event 25 pounds lighter and was determined to make a good showing. (If you are an applicant, I strongly advise you attend these events.) Four months later, I received the call that I had been accepted to the Houston Police Department as a Cadet.

FAST FORWARD…As I sit in the same classroom with 73 other cadets, I think of the thousands of applicants who want my seat. The weight of the training to come, the physical demands, the family obligations that will be put on hold, and the dedication weighs heavy on me. We are reminded by our instructors that not everyone is cut out to be a Houston Police Officer. They show us the front door and say there is no shame in leaving now. No one left the classroom. Then we were reminded that we were chosen to become police officers and a lot of eyes are watching Class 212.

On that first day, Chief McClelland addressed and welcomed us as cadets and promised that all the hard work would pay off. Captain Ready (academy staff) challenged the class to be prepared and respectful of those who wear a blue shirt. As the week progressed, Class 212 quickly learned that 'attention to detail' is key to getting through the day without doing push ups. Officer Nicola (academy staff) reminded us, "That the only easy day was yesterday."

Class 212 is slowing coming together as a team. The camaraderie is growing and the friendships are getting warmer. Our class leader (McMurtry) is assertive and encouraging us to strive for excellence. All of us are being challenged to reach deep inside ourselves and break all those mental obstacles that keep us from being excellent.

Friday came like a hurricane. The gym staff pushed each cadet during our first physical testing. We took a breather and then got our butts kicked for not following directions. It tested our intestinal fortitude. As I gutted out a push up plank, I knew this correction would eventually end…but would I beat it or let it beat me? An instructor walked by me and whispered "have pride, Rivera." I beat it. Everything is done for a purpose and the pain in the gym will keep us from bleeding in the field.

As I packed my locker at the end of the day, I said good-bye to several cadets. I smiled. "Wow, I am in the Houston Police Academy!" I am with the best the City of Houston has to offer. I am honored to be in the presence of 73 other incredible men and women who have been chosen to join the Houston Police Department. I look forward to the next six months.

However, at the last minute he was granted leave and was able to fly home from Iraq to attend. Tradition held strong as HPD Cadet Class 211 held their final roll call as the sun rose above the police academy this morning. Cadet classes will stand in formation during roll call and will announce their names one by one very quickly. Throughout training, roll calls are done the same way every time, every morning. However, on graduation day, such as Class 211, it is done a little differently with each cadet of Class 211 slowing down and pronouncing their name loudly and proudly. Later tonight, the 72 men and women of 211 will graduate and began wearing the blue uniform.

Houston Police Chief Charles A. McClelland, Jr. and Houston Texans Pro-Bowl wide receiver Andre Johnson kicked off HPD's annual Blue Santa Christmas efforts this morning.

The purpose of this event is to encourage public support for the Blue Santa Houston program and increase the number of underpriviledged families assisted this year through community donations and corporate sponsorships. Since 1984 the Blue Santa Program has delivered thousands of gifts, toys and holiday cheer to needy children and their families. The program is expected to provide toys to more than 12,000 kids.

As I went for my long early jog this morning I passed an American flag in my neighborhood. Suddenly I was thinking about the opening scene in the movie “Saving Private Ryan.” I began to get sad.

The sacrifices that veterans made not only with their lives but to their families they left behind to gain us our freedom.

From my dad (Korea), grandfather (WWII), my son (IRAQ), my best friend (Operation Freedom), to all my extended family here at HPD. Veterans all, giving for the greater good.

Pain and sacrifice to family and individual is unfathomable for me to comprehend.

Fortitude + Determination = Gilbert

With over five months of intensive training both while at the police academy and at home during his own time, Cadet Gilbert “captures” his goal.

Academy Class 211 Cadet R. Gilbert recently broke both the cadet record and department record in the 1.5 mile run.

The men’s cadet record was 8:06 and the men’s department record was 8:02.

Cadet Gilbert shattered the record by 20 seconds by running the 1.5 mile run in 7:42.

Real Time Crime Center

The Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) is a centralized technology center in which its primary purpose is to give field officers and investigators instant and comprehensive information to help find suspects, vehicles, identify patterns and stop emerging crime.

While on routine patrol one of our officers responded to a “Robbery with a Weapon” call at a place of business along the Gulf freeway. When the officer arrived on the scene, the clerk who reported the incident told him that she had been assaulted and robbed by a suspect. She explained that the suspect entered the business posing as an employee and demanded his paycheck. While the clerk was searching for a fictitious name that the suspect gave, he physically assaulted the clerk, grabbed a stack of payroll checks and fled the scene in a vehicle which was being driven by another suspect. The crooks were unaware that a witness had observed the robbery from a distance. The witness provided a possible plate number, but was not sure of the accuracy of the license plate number.

The investigator assigned to the case had a possible plate number and description of the assailants’ vehicle. However, the information was not yielding the identity of the suspect or the getaway car. This assignment was given to Crime Information Analyst (CIA) Gonzalez for further investigation. Gonzalez utilized numerous RTCC databases in order to obtain information associated with the suspect and the vehicle. After completing a comprehensive search, she was able to locate an address affiliated with a possible suspect. Additionally, she uncovered several plate numbers and identified the getaway car used in the robbery, which eventually led to the identity of the suspects.

An HPD investigator gathered the evidence collected by CIA Gonzalez and moved forward with the investigation by finding the identity of the driver of the getaway car and narrowing his focus towards the suspect than entered the business. The investigator then assembled a photo spread of the suspect and showed it to the victim who positively identified the suspect as the robber who assaulted her. The case was solved and charges were filed. HPD would like to commend CIA Gonzalez for a job well done. Because of her experience and skill, the crime spree was brought to an expeditious end.

Houston Mayor Annise Parker and Police Chief Charles A. McClelland, Jr. were joined by Houston Texans player Mario Williams yesterday to unveil the Pro Bowl linebacker's donation of five Chevrolet Camaros to HPD's Traffic Enforcement Division.

These new traffic enforcement vehicles will be outfitted to run radar, have low profile lights and ghost writing to allow them to blend in with regular traffic. HPD will use them on and off freeways to enforce traffic violations.

“Ever since Mario came to Houston, he has certainly been a friend to law enforcement and is civic minded and wants to help his community,” said Chief McClelland. “These five Camaros will increase the capabilities of the police department to address speeding, aggressive drivers and ensure the safety of the motoring public. I can’t thank him enough for this generous donation.”

Williams was assisted by Knapp Chevrolet in obtaining the new 2011 police package Chevrolet Camaros for HPD.

The Houston Police Department Motorcycle Detail better known as “SOLO Detail” was established in 1909 to address the growing traffic concerns in downtown Houston.

Officers for this detail are selected when an opening occurs and they must possess a valid Texas Class M license, have excellent work and attendance history with a minimum of two years experience as an officer. Furthermore, they must have a willingness to work flexible hours and shifts in inclement weather. Applicants must also pass a riding evaluation to demonstrate their ability to operate a motorcycle over a course designed to evaluate basic motorcycle riding skills.

The Houston Police Department will help raise money for Special Olympics of Texas at the Pirates of the CARisma carwash, 5203 Kirby Drive. HPD "pirates" will take over the car wash on October 29th and encourage people to get the $10 car wash at CARisma. With each $10 car wash in October (enter Code 3333), CARisma will donate $4 to Special Olympics of Texas.

The fundraiser will begin at 8:00 am and last all day.

From 8:00pm-10:00 pm the carwash will close and a kid friendly "pirate adventure" will be the theme, donations to Special Olympics will be accepted.

Last Tuesday, Senior Police Officer James Sobota was awarded the "2011 Mayor’s Disability Advocate of the Year Award". Officer Sobota is the department's Citywide Positive Interaction Program coordinator and heads up the PIP program.

In addition, Officer Sobota researched and coordinated the need for the department to purchase and install nineteen (19) Video Remote Interpreting (V.R.I.) devices, with services provided by DeafLink, placed and operated at both airports, both jail divisions and all patrol stations to improve the ability to communicate and build a stronger, broader relationship with deaf community of Houston.

HPD would like to commend Officer Sobota for a job well done.

Recently, Officer G. Rodriguez was on routine patrol when he was flagged down by a female citizen. She had been a passenger in a car being driven by her father. Her father suffered a heart attack and was unconscious. Officer Rodriguez quickly accessed the situation and realized that the man did not have a pulse. Officer Rodriguez immediately began CPR and was soon assisted by Officer E. Hernandez who arrived on the scene. Both officers worked furiously to bring the man back to life.

The Houston Fire Department arrived on the scene and took over. After the patient was defibrillated inside the ambulance, he regained consciousness.

HFD advised that without the immediate application of CPR the man may have died.

Thanks to the life-saving efforts of Officer Rodriguez and Officer Hernandez this man’s life was spared. HPD would like to commend these two officers for a job well done.

Houston Mayor Annise Parker, Police Chief Charles A. McClelland, Jr. and several city council members celebrated last Wednesday the grand opening of the new home of the South Gessner Patrol Division.

Mayor Parker and Chief McClelland stressed a strong partnership between HPD and the community will be the key to success.

"I'm very proud of this new facility," said Chief McClelland. "It helps us with our core mission of protecting the public through better police/community relations. Thanks to its high visibility and community meeting room, residents will have an opportunity to get to know the officers working in their neighborhoods and partner with HPD to help make the area safer for everyone," Chief McClelland added.
"It is my hope that this new building will help provide a setting for more convenient interaction between our men and women in blue and the southwest Houston community," said Mayor Parker. "Maintaining a close relationship between law enforcement and neighborhoods is the key to keeping our communities safe."
The new station is especially dear to Houston Council Member Anne Clutterbuck, in whose district it resides.

“I am so glad to see the hard-working South Gessner Patrol Division officers at home in a space that allows them to better serve the community. While the new building is certainly beautiful, I am most impressed by the officers’ dedication to their work and the community’s efforts to support them,” Council Member Clutterbuck said.

The facility incorporates the LEED™ Green Building standards and is LEED™ certified. The LEED™ certification system verifies the building was designed and constructed with attention to energy savings, water efficiency, and CO2 emissions. Construction was overseen by the Houston General Services Department.

The police station will house 176 officers and civilians assigned to South Gessner Patrol, as well as officers from the Investigative First Responder (I.F.R.) Division. All officers will have access to a gym facility. In order to reduce the amount of time officers are out of service on minor arrests, the station will also feature a jail lock-up for class C prisoners. A community meeting room will be available to help facilitate open lines of communication between officers and residents. The facility is equipped with a large emergency generator, an ice machine, and hurricane supplies, which will allow HPD to continue serving the community in the event of a natural or man-made disaster.

Air Support, K-9, SWAT, Special Ops, Dive Team, Community Services, and other officers were on hand to demonstrate what they do, and to interact with the kids.

I can’t believe that I have graduated from the academy and in my field training program already. During the academy time seemed to crawl by, but looking back at it now, it seems the time I spent there just flew by.

It was amazing how many people – our family, friends, and fellow officers showed up at our graduation. I felt really proud to be marching with the rest of 210 and receiving my badge with them. We all worked so very hard to get to the end and have the badge finally placed on our uniform.

I am now training at the substation of my choice and have been training there for over a week now. I learned a lot in the academy but I know I will learn a lot more in the next nine weeks of field training. Each new officer completes three weeks of training on each shift; days, evenings, and nights.

I can’t believe how excited I am when I wake up for work. I know that this job is what I was meant to do.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the academy staff, family, friends, and co-workers that helped me through the last six months and I’ll continue to look to them for support as I continue through my training.

After nine primary tests, four quizzes, one state exam, three physical fitness tests, several officer safety phases, and countless other tests and requirements that I had to fulfill in the past six months I am so happy to be OFFICER Gemmill. I wouldn’t trade the experiences and the opportunity HPD has given me for anything.

I am so happy to be part of the HPD family. Like my trainer recently told me, “we take care of family.”

We’ve seen the four-legged law enforcement officers who help police take down criminals. But just how affective are these canines? KHOU 11 News anchor Len Cannon found out firsthand this week, for his latest “Len at Work” segment.

Len visited the place where the animals are trained and said he quickly learned they are not to be messed with.

He first met Jake, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois. “We use him on explosives, he can do it all, he is an awesome dog,” said one of the HPD canine trainers. Len got to handle Jake a little, who takes commands in Dutch. After just a few minutes of feeling Jake out, Len said he wanted to take it up a notch. “This is like putting a Ferrari in neutral, so the officers let me put Jake in first gear,” he said. Len got to witness the dog react during a training police chase. He said the most impressive part was seeing what Jake did once he discovered the “criminal.” “Once he latches on, Jake won’t let go until officers tell him to,” Len said.

But Len’s day wasn’t done yet. He next put on what’s called an attack sleeve so he could stand face to face with Kitty, a smaller dog. But police brought out a bigger dog instead. “His name was Udee. Bigger dog, bigger bite,” Len said. “That was a bait and switch. I thought I was going to get Kitty and you send this big thing out here.”

Then Len upped the ante, this time putting on a full body suit.

After feeling Jake’s vice grip-like jaws one more time, officers brought out a bear of a dog named Cosmo.

“I felt that, I felt that,” said Len. “I think I’m done now.”

Sometimes it's not a good idea to walk up and ask a police officer if you could pet his K-9 dog as a Binghamton, New York man found out last week. The forty- eight year old man went to pet the K-9 dog and in return ended up arrested for possession of marijuana after the dog reacted to the scent.

I finally graduated from the academy last week. It was a long 6 months that I never thought would end.

I’ve had four days on the streets at North Division and I absolutely love it! My Field Training Instructor is the best. We have volunteered for a variety of calls requiring assistance from Homicide, Robbery, Burglary and Theft, Narcotics to the District Attorney’s office. I’ve written numerous traffic citations, accident reports, incident reports as well as utilizing many other forms. I feel like I’ve used everything I learned in the academy in the first 4 days on the street.

We were told that the HPD Academy was one of the best, if not the best academy in the nation, I totally agree. The academy prepared me well regarding Officer Safety, Accidents, Report Writing, Scene Management, Spanish, Traffic Stops and Driving (drove my first Code One, lights and sirens, call Sunday.)

I’m learning my beat and district, getting to know my fellow officers, dispatchers and best of all; I’m able to help the citizens of Houston. My whole reason for joining HPD was to help people who couldn’t help themselves or just needed some direction or assistance.

Since last Wednesday a week ago, I’ve gone to work every morning eager to get started and I leave with a big smile on face. I’ve wanted this career for a long time and I couldn’t be happier that I have been given that opportunity now. I don’t know if I would feel the same had I started this when I was 21, but being 40 and having all the life experiences that I’ve had I’m thrilled to be where I’m at now. In the academy they warn you that this job may not be for everyone. There are many ups and downs, bad times and good. I’ve seen an array of those already, from the grieving family due to the loss of a loved one to the scared siblings who were thrilled to see several officers at their door during a home invasion.

The academy trains you to stay focused, professional, and to get the job done right and at the end when it’s all over you can take a breath. That’s exactly how it’s been. I can not thank the staff at the academy enough for the dedication they have given us in the last six months. Everything they did and said had a purpose and that is to keep me and my classmates safe out there and to make sure we all go home at the end of the day. From the bottom of my heart I would like to personally thank the following trainers: Captain Ready for all your encouragement during Redman and throughout the academy, Lt. Coker for always putting the fear in us to make us do better, Sergeant Spangle for being blunt and to the point, Officer Lyall for bringing humor into the classroom,. Officer Uphoff for all of our conversations regarding family and the job, Officer E Wolfe for getting me around that RED track (I can’t believe I love running now), Officer Hinojosa for all the Spanish handouts and reviews (I used it on day 2 and did pretty well), Officer Cromwell for not freaking out when I obliterated all the cones on day 1 (rock n roll), Officers Murphy, Boskey and Walsh for making firearms my favorite skill, and lastly, but definitely not least, my classmates of Class 210- you all ROCK! Be safe and I look forward to seeing each of you in a few months!!!

Tradition held strong as HPD Cadet Class 210 held their final roll call as the sun rose above the police academy last Tuesday morning. Cadet classes will stand in formation during roll call and will announce their names one by one very quickly. Throughout training, roll calls are done the same way every time, every morning. However, on graduation day, such as Class 210, it is done a little differently with each cadet of Class 210 slowing down and pronouncing their name loudly and proudly. Later that night, the 65 men and women of 210 graduated and began wearing the blue uniform.

Thank you Senior Police Officer David Freytag. Today is bittersweet, David has retired from HPD. He has served this great city for 48 years with extreme dedication and fortitude throughout his career. He will be missed.

Senior Officer Freytag joined the Houston Police Department almost five decades ago. Besides patrolling the streets of Houston protecting and serving the citizens of this city, he has spent countless hours forming and fostering the HPD Honor Guard. His efforts have led to an Honor Guard known for being the standard of excellence in law enforcement circles.

His dedication to HPD and the Honor Guard will not be forgotten.

At 6:30 p.m. tonight, Houston Mayor Annise Parker, Police Chief Charles A. McClelland Jr. and the Houston Police Department will welcome dozens of new police officers to the city during a cadet graduation ceremony at the L. D. Morrison Police Training Academy.

Sixty-five men and women of Cadet Class 210 will graduate from the HPD Academy.

The graduates just completed a rigorous 26-week training regimen and will be added to patrol stations throughout the city to help respond to citizens’ calls.

HPD would like to commend officers of the Eastside Division for their charity an...d self initiative. A few weeks ago, Officer J. Campbell and his partner Officer L. Rodriguez were called to a disturbance in the East End. The disturbance was resolved but the officers witnessed the unbearable living conditions that an elderly mother and her son with Down Syndrome, were subject to. The residence did not have air conditioning or fans and in the current heat wave the temperature inside exceeded 110 degrees.

Officer K. Pederson and Officer H. Diaz met up with Officer Campbell and Rodriguez and heard of their account of the disadvantaged family in need. These four officers were moved by the family’s plight and motivated to assist them. Officer Pederson went to the Home Depot to purchase an air conditioning unit with his own funds. The manager of Home Depot stopped him in conversation and found out why he was there. The manager was heartbroken that people were suffering so much in her community and arranged to have an air conditioner donated to the family in need.

Officer Campbell, Officer Rodriguez, Officer Pederson and Officer Diaz delivered the air conditioning unit to the family and installed it for them. The kindness of these officers added more than comfort to the disabled family. They addressed a health hazard. These officers represent not just the best character we appreciate in the Houston Police Department but what we yearn to have in the human race.

SWAT Takes Cannon Out!

You see them in action in movies and television shows. It looks so glamorous to be on a SWAT team. What could be better than toting an assault rifle and battering down doors?

Well, KHOU 11 News Anchor Len Cannon found out that training with Houston SWAT is no walk in the park.

“You have to be disciplined and you have to be in top physical conditioning,” said Cannon.

On the obstacle course he climbed, crawled and jumped.
“Some stuff I just could not do,” said Cannon.
Firing a submachine gun and assault rifle was the easy part, Cannon said.
“Then, for some ridiculous reason I let the leader of the team Talk me into tasting a little gas (chemical agent,” said Cannon.
He stepped into a tear gas-filled shed and was able to withstand the chemical agent with a mask on. “Then I took the mask off, and thought I was going to die,” he said. “It felt like broken glass in my throat, and I couldn’t talk for about 20 seconds,”

After stepping in the shoes of a SWAT member, Cannon had some words of advice for those aspiring to join the force. “If you want the SWAT swagger, you better be prepared to face the music!”

Never Forget!

In Honor of Officer Kevin Will

It was a somber evening last week as another name was added to the Wall of Honor for fallen Officer Kevin Will.

The Wall of Honor is located within the Houston Police Museum at police headquarters. It stands as a tribute to all officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice serving the city of Houston and its citizens.

On May 29, 2011, Kevin was interviewing a witness to a motorcycle accident when a drunk driver drove around barriers and emergency vehicles which were blocking the closed freeway. Seeing the vehicle approach, Kevin warned the witness to jump out of the way. The citizen was able to jump to safety moments before Kevin was struck and killed.

Kevin had served with the Houston Police Department for almost two years. He is survived by his expectant wife, two children, and parents.

The engraving was completed as a courtesy by Schlitzberger & Daughters Monuments and Caskets. HPD appreciates your kindness and generosity in completing this very sad task.

210 Update - Cadet Williamson

Just five more weeks remaining until graduation, and Class 210 is doing everything we can to avoid the dreaded "Senioritis". Senioritis is an infamous condition the senior class of cadets get when they can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We've been warned by just about every officer who has taught a class that Senioritis can cause feelings of euphoria which may lead a cadet to forget their place in the food chain. This contagious condition may cause cadets to forget to snap to attention quickly enough or not yell "YES SIR" loudly enough. It may cause cadets to smile at inappropriate times or to whisper during a class.

There are treatments for Senioritis, but they are harsh. Commonly prescribed treatments often involve steep hills, bear crawls, ditches filled with mud, and an untold number of push-ups. Thankfully, though, there is a cure. It's called graduation, and it happens on September 27th. The cure only lasts a day, though, as it's quickly replaced by an acute form of confused delirium called Rookiementia. With Rookiementia, the real victims are the Field Training Officers with whom the rookie must ride.

Speaking of riding, I recently had the opportunity to participate in the HPD ride-along program and rode for a day with Officer C. Bradshaw in Fondren Division. I saw first hand what proactive, positive spirited, educated police work is all about. In the academy, you work through scenes on paper, in film, and with actors, but seeing it done flawlessly by an expert for a single shift meant more to me than my entire academy experience. Officer Bradshaw completed a litany of calls with precision handling of angry complainants, sad complainants, scared complainants, and a collection of folks most would agree were extra suspicious. In each case, she went the extra mile for the complainant, doing work behind the scenes that the complainant would likely never know she did for them. In some cases, simply making a report would have sufficed, but she instinctively went the extra mile to make sure no stone went unturned in solving their cases. Not only was I blown away by how effective and efficient great policing can be, but I was inspired to do the same when my turn comes. As Officer Bradshaw pointed out, at the end of the day, it's good to know you did something to actually help people.

Very few professions offer that kind of bonus.
