HPD Officer Prevents Suicide

Today, Sergeant Steve Wick, a 23-year veteran of HPD, spoke with a distraught woman threatening suicide as she sat on the ledge of a nine-story parking garage.  He crouched down and listened to her problems as she discussed being troubled by various family matters.

Sgt. Wick slowly gained her trust and, after 45 minutes, convinced her to climb down from the ledge. He assured her she was not going to jail, and instead she was taken to the NeuroPsychiatric Center (NPC) where she could get the help she needed.

This is the second time Sgt. Wick, who is assigned to the Homeless Outreach Team, has successfully talked down someone from suicide.

Chief Charles McClelland meets with HPD Student Interns

HPD Chief Charles McClelland, Jr. met with a group of HPD student interns recently for an open discussion on decision making, achieving goals, and following HPD’s core values of Honor, Integrity, and Respect.

The young men and women are a part of the HPD Volunteer Initiatives Program (VIP) Student Internship.

The student internship program provides qualified students with course credit and practical work experience that compliments their academic course work. It provides HPD an opportunity to involve students in various aspects of police work and provides students with an opportunity to integrate theory and practice.

Students from participating institutions may perform a one or two-term internship. Criminal Justice students may perform their internships at various locations/divisions throughout the police department. Social Work students may perform their internships under the Family Violence Unit, Homicide Division, Victim Services Unit, Planning and Research Office, or the Special Victims Division.

To become an intern at HPD, a student must complete and successfully pass the VIP Application Process.

For more information on the Volunteer Initiatives Program and Student Internships, visit the HPD Website or call 713-308-3200 and ask to speak with Senior Police Officer A. Valle or Mrs. Maria Ponce.

Cheers to the Houston Police Department

Gavin Glynn is a brave 4-year-old boy from Ireland who recently received a special visit from Houston Police Officers. A fundraiser was held in Ireland so Gavin, who has a rare form of cancer, and his family could come to Houston's MD Anderson Cancer Center and receive treatment. The Garda (Irish Federal Police Force) reached out to HPD since Gavin is fascinated with anything police related.

Gavin was treated to a visit from Mounted Patrol horses Smash and Cushing and several HPD officers. Gavin was also made an honorary police officer. HPD plans to visit with Gavin and his family periodically while he is here in Houston for his treatment.

For more pictures on HPD's visit with Gavin, go to HPD's Flickr account at this link.

Thank you to Gavin's father, John Glynn, for the great video seen here below.
