I was pondering what to put on the blog today when my mother called me on my cell phone to tell me that she had just been hit by a live turtle and it dented her car. As I listened to her story in all its glorious detail I started wondering where she was going with it. Did she want to file an accident report on the turtle? She proceeded to tell me that a truck ran over a turtle in the road and threw the turtle in the air at which point the turtle hit her car twice creating two dents in the side of her car. As she was complaining to me about the dents in her car I could not help wondering about the status of the poor turtle. I gently asked "is the turtle alright?"...Silence...
Thanksgiving dinner at moms might be "canned ham" this year which is probably what I deserve for my uncaring comment. I am alright with this and probably even deserve it, just as long as it's not turtle soup.
What does this incident involving my mother and a turtle have to do with police work? While I was on patrol one time I had pulled a lady over for running a stop sign. She apologized to me and told me she was not paying attention because she was watching a turtle cross the road. Hearing every excuse in the book, and this being a new one, I told her if she could point out this so called turtle, I would let her off with a warning. She advised me to look down by my left foot where I was standing. I kid you not, there was a turtle
valiantly attempting to cross the street. I let her go with a warning. True story.
Because of this incident on patrol so many years ago, I believed my mom while she was telling me that her car was hit by a turtle.
