What is the meaning of "backbone?"

A main support or major sustaining factor, strength of character; determination.

1. a central cohesive source of support and stability
2. fortitude and determination; "he didn't have the guts to try it"
and of course the spine that binds...
Patrol is known as the "backbone" of the department. This is where it all starts. Everyone who joins the Houston Police Department as a police officer will start in patrol. Without patrol, all else fails. Officers patrolling the streets of Houston keep an eye on all of us, respond to calls for service and citizens in need. It is exciting, different, challenging and every day is different. There are new problems, new challenges, and new and different calls with every turn. Your shift will fly by and before you know it your career will be in full swing. We need you, the city needs you. It has never been easier to join the Houston Police Department than it is right now. Simply apply online at http://www.hpdcareer.com/. Every city needs a hero, is it you?

My probation ends this month. It has been an amazing year for me and I still can not believe that I am a Houston Police Officer. I have learned so much over the last year with all the credit going to my trainers. You don't know how much pride I have in the blue uniform and the respect I have for the men and women who truly make a difference out there on the street.

I've been a Houston Police Officer for over 23 years and Off. McCoy you are right. Times does fly. I can't imagine doing any other job. Patrol is the backbone of the department. It is an assignment where one gathers the experience to be used a foundation to get to other specialized jobs. As a trainer I know that being in patrol is exciting as well as rewarding. Its never a dull moment and the satisfaction one gets knowing you are in a position to help others is very rewarding. Like Officer T. Nguyen, I am also very proud to be a Houston Police Officer. I am also grateful to Off. McCoy and Off. T. Nguyen for the opportunity to be in one of the pictures. If you are thinking about joining one of the best police departments in the world, don't think anymore. Sign up. Off. McCoy and Off. T. Nguyen keep up the good work!!

Thank you for the compliment and I am sure Officer Nguyen appreciates it also. People just do not understand how rewarding this career can be unless they pursue it.
