63 Badges

With the graduation of 63 new officers from Cadet Class 196, the city of Houston has surpassed the 5,000 mark. The current number of officers now stands at 5,044. The 63 new officers will be added to patrol stations across the city and hit the streets patrolling our neighborhoods. The noteworthy item is that we will stay above that number from this point forward. City Council has approved seven cadet classes for FY2009 and the number of police officers for Houston will continue to grow. Why don't you grow with us at http://www.hpdcareer.com/

Answer to question number one: Yes, those badges were the exact badges that were going to be pinned on the officers that night.

Answer to question number two: Yes, as long as you will turn 21 by the time you graduate from the academy. Remember the academy is six months long.

Does the 5,044 number actually reflect the number of sworn personnel that may show up at work any given day, or does it include the "phase-down" officers that are basically retired?

That number does not include phase down officers.
